Friends. There are no words to express how important friends are to you during teen and tween years. You can tell them everything, go to them when you are sad or mad, and even excited. But what do you do when your friend texts you with a problem and you have never been through the situation before.
I was in the same situation a couple of days ago. I was sitting at the table when a facebook message popped up on my screen. "I need someone to talk to". Through our conversation I found out that my friends' crush was flirting with 23 year old girls (he was only 15 :()?) I didn't know what to do. I had never heard or been through anything like that. I was also in the odd position because I knew my friend shouldn't have been hanging out with this person anyway. SO when she came crying to me I really wanted to tell her that she shouldn't have liked this guy in the first place. SO what did I do? here is what I did.
1. Put yourself in your friends shoes- If you have never been through the same thing as your friend is going through relate the situation to a time where you felt the smae emotion that they did. '
2. Try to be comforting- Show your friend that they are not alone.
3. Have them look at the positives- It is amazing how if you look at the positive things the negative goes away.
4. Change the subject- If your friend doesn't seem to be getting better slowly change to something more positive.
5. Know when to stop- If your friend seems to be getting worse and not angry then log off. Your friend may just need some time to think over what is going on.
6. Don't tell them that they are wrong - Even if you think that what your friend did was wrong telling them this may make them not want to trust you anymore and can make the situation worse.
Remember: Your friend will get better eventually.
